Dimity Dornan
We're celebrating Queensland's Associate Professor @dimity.dornan .. Trained as a speech pathologist, Dr Dornan became the first person in that role to work full time at the Princess Alexandra, Royal Brisbane and Royal Children's Hospital in Queensland where she worked with patients who had suffered head injuries and strokes.
Since then, she has focused her career on working with children an young people who have suffered from hearing loss.
In 1991, after learning about Auditory-Verbal children at a conference, Dr Dimity Dornan was awarded a Churchill Fellowship and travelled to Canada to learn more about their auditory-verbal programs.
On her return, she established the foundations of @hearandsay, and 25 plus years later, she has directly contributed to teaching and helping deaf children to listen and speak by training their brains to use implantable bionic technology such as the cochlear implant.
Since the initial formation of Hear and Say, Dr Dornan has expanded the program globally to provide opportunities for deaf children in developing countries.
Dr Dimity Dornan was awarded Queensland Senior Australian of the Year in 2018, has been inducted into the Queensland Business Hall of Fame, is a recipient of the Order of Australia, plus many other honours/awards.
