Dr Catherine Hamlin AC
1924-2020
Born in Sydney in 1924, Catherine graduated from medical school at The University of Sydney in 1946, before starting her obstetrics residency at Crown Street Women's Hospital.
She married her husband Dr Reginald Hamlin in 1950, and nine years later they moved to Ethiopia where they established a midwifery school at the Princess Tsehay Hospital in Addis Ababa.
15 years later, they created the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, where they worked tirelessly to care for women and girls affected by fistulas as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. With over 60,000 women treated since the hospital opened.
In January 2019, Catherine celebrated her 95th birthday, with this year also marking her 60th year involved with helping some of the world's most vulnerable women.
